Billie Eilish makes History

On the catwalk and in the audience, Billie Eilish sang the majority of the songs from her album Happier Than Ever to cap off Coachella’s events. The Gen Z icon expanded her audience and demonstrated her ability to win over virtually any crowd when she was joined by Damon Albarn and Posdnous. Her presentation was peppered with tender exchanges with her brother and fellow musician Finneas, as the two shared numerous acoustic songs. "Coachella was a fantasy location to perform at as a child growing up in L.A.," Finneas said over the weekend to Rolling Stone.) Eilish made festival history as the festival's youngest headlining performer ever, yet she has an air of experience and is unquestionably one of the most influential pop performers of her time.

The Win for Megan and the Hotties

Megan Thee Stallion made a splash with her Coachella debut, delivering a set that was tough to resist dancing to and included a slew of viral songs like "Body," "WAP," "Thot Shit," "Savage," and "Hot Girl Summer." She didn't hold back as she launched a new diss tune directed at an ex. Although the source of the song's inspiration is not immediately apparent, Tory Lanez has already been suggested by several fans.

Beyoncé

Simply put Beychella. The legendary singer finally performed in 2018 after postponing due to pregnancy the year before, and the 26-song performance did not disappoint in the slightest. In addition to paying a powerful visual homage to historically black institutions and universities, Bey also brought back Destiny's Child for the first time in several years and unexpectedly invited sister Solange and husband Jay-Z to the performance. The performance was the focus of the Netflix documentary Homecoming as well.

Lawrence

With jam band-level instrumentalism, a song that recently debuted in the Billboard top 40 ("Don't Lose Sight"), and horn-driven punctuation that feels prepared for any kind of party, this brother-sister duo and their band gave the audience a jolt of high-energy, high-musicianship blue-eyed soul and funk on Friday. Their small-stage tent revival is already prepared for a mid-day mainstage blowout because of their contagious delight, which is especially evident these days.

L’imperatice

Every Coachella has that moment: a relatively obscure band starts playing on the little Gobi tent in the middle of the afternoon when it's barely halfway filled, only to ignite a dance frenzy that quickly fills the remaining space. L'imperatice from France was this year's breakout act. Their precipice-of-the-'80s-influenced, sincere Eurodisco caused a huge crowd to swarm around them as they attempted to dance and admire their ridiculously adorable, heart-pumping bright-red jumpsuits.

Elfman, Danny

The former Oingo Boingo frontman and Oscar-nominated composer dug deep, deep into his discography for a potent performance that featured Boingo classics like "Dead Man's Party," newer material like the harder-rocking "Love in the Time of COVID," and, of course, a singalong to "This is Halloween" from "A Nightmare Before Christmas," all performed with a massive 50-piece-plus band and orchestra that also included Josh Frees.

Snoop Dogg and Tupac

The late, great rapper, who was not around for the inaugural Coachella festival in 1999, nevertheless figuratively arose from the dead to "perform" with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg as the festival's 2012 headliners. All 80,000 attendees were in awe when the eerily lifelike hologram, which took months to make and had Tupac's mother's approval, yelled, "What the f—k is up Coachella?!" Hits like "2 of America's Most Wanted" and "Hail Mary" were brought to the main stage using footage from the late artist's final concert in 1996.
