Italian Mobster Running A Pizza Place

Italian anti-Mafia police have arrested Edgardo Greco, 63, a notorious 'Ndrangheta member, who had been on the run since 1991 when he was convicted of double murder and attempted murder of prison officials. Greco was apprehended in Saint-Etienne, France, where he was working as a pizza chef under the alias Paolo Dimitrio.

Nickname: "Prison Killer"

Edgardo Greco earned the nickname "prison killer" due to his conviction for the attempted murder of several prison officials. He was described as a "dangerous fugitive" by Nicola Gratteri, the anti-Mafia prosecutor who led the investigation.

Social Media Slip

Gratteri started closing in on Greco after he was featured in an article in the French newspaper Le Progres, which was posted on the official Facebook page of the restaurant where he was working. Greco had also been posting regularly on social media under his false name, according to police.

Mafia Bosses' Love for Attention

Journalist and author Roberto Saviano, who has been living under police protection, said that it is common for Mafia bosses to crave attention. "It’s typical. Look at El Chapo, who, when he was working, wanted to meet Sean Penn who he wanted to make a movie about him. And Al Capone wanted to go on the movie set of ‘Scarface," he said in an interview.

Italian Anti-Mafia Police on the Hunt

The Italian anti-Mafia police said that they are still searching for four major mafiosi who are in hiding and several lesser figures who are on the run. The police are using various methods to apprehend them, such as arresting those within their protective networks, sequestering bank accounts and assets, and monitoring social media for mistakes like the one Greco made.
